The Perfect 14-Day Everest Base Camp Itinerary for Beginners
A day-by-day breakdown of the standard, safest, and most popular route to Everest Base Camp.

Pacing is the absolute key to successfully reaching Everest Base Camp. While extremely fit trekkers might be tempted to rush, the mountain dictates the schedule.
This standard 14-day itinerary is the golden rule of Himalayan trekking. It includes the mandatory acclimatization days required to keep you safe, energized, and altitude-sickness free. Here is the day-by-day breakdown of the most famous trekking route in the world.
Phase 1: Into the Khumbu
The first few days are all about adjusting to the trail, crossing suspension bridges, and entering the Sherpa heartland.
Fly to Lukla & Trek to Phakding
After a thrilling morning flight to the famous Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla (2,860m), you will begin a gentle, downhill 3-hour walk to the riverside village of Phakding (2,610m) to spend your first night.
The Climb to Namche Bazaar
A tough day! You will cross the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge and tackle a steep, grinding ascent to Namche Bazaar (3,440m), the bustling capital of the Sherpa people.
Acclimatization in Namche
Rest day! You will hike up to the Everest View Hotel (3,880m) for your first panoramic view of Mount Everest, then descend back to Namche to sleep, following the "Climb High, Sleep Low" rule.
Trek to Tengboche
A stunning walk with Everest in view the whole way. You will end the day at Tengboche (3,860m), home to the largest and most famous Buddhist monastery in the Khumbu region.
Phase 2: Pushing Higher
The trees disappear, the air gets noticeably thinner, and the landscape transforms into a dramatic, high-alpine desert.
Trek to Dingboche
You will cross the 4,000-meter mark today, trekking past Pangboche and arriving at the windy, picturesque village of Dingboche (4,410m).
Second Acclimatization Day
Crucial for your summit success. You will hike up the steep ridge of Nangkartshang Peak to safely expose your body to higher altitudes before sleeping in Dingboche again.
Trek to Lobuche
You will pass the emotional Chukwu Lari memorial (dedicated to climbers who perished on Everest) and arrive at Lobuche (4,940m). The air is very thin here.
Base Camp Day!
The big day. You will trek to Gorak Shep (5,164m), drop your heavy bags at the tea house, and hike along the Khumbu Glacier to the iconic Everest Base Camp (5,364m) to celebrate!
Kala Patthar & Descent
An early morning 4:00 AM climb to the summit of Kala Patthar (5,545m) to watch the sunrise over Mount Everest. Afterwards, you will begin the long descent to Pheriche (4,371m).
Phase 3: The Descent
With the hard work done and more oxygen in the air with every step, you will fly down the mountain feeling like a superhero.
- Day 10: Descend from Pheriche back to the comforts of Namche Bazaar.
- Day 11: Final day of walking! Trek from Namche all the way back to Lukla to celebrate with your guides and porters.
- Days 12-14: Fly back to Kathmandu. These extra days act as buffer days in case your Lukla flight is delayed due to weather.
Why You Cannot Skip Rest Days
Trekkers often ask if they can skip Days 3 and 6 to finish the trek faster. The answer is absolutely not. These days are critical for allowing your body to build red blood cells. Rushing this itinerary is the number one cause of altitude sickness and helicopter evacuations.
